Some people think that failing ballasts will trigger their thermal protection, so it could be as simple as cooler weather or components that are failing but haven’t yet, and a little variability in temperature or the intial jolt of electricity may make it work for a while. I generally found CFLs to be finicky and annoying after a while, though i don’t recall ever having one that seemed to die completely and then come back.

I actually kind of like that Apple has become a boring and iterative company for the most part. I just use the same glass and metal rectangle until a few months after my upgrade eligibility on my work plan (because I always forget when it is), then I get whichever glass and metal rectangle is cheap now. I routinely forget which iPhone I use, and my life is no worse because of it.

At my kid’s elementary school, they just have a charging rack full of cheap Chromebooks and the kids check one out in the morning and put it back in the afternoon. The middle schoolers get to take them home.

Tell that to the civil engineers who designed spaghetti bowls full of splits and left-exits and ignored surface street routes and mass transit so even when the freeways are moving at the speed limit there is enough traffic that there is no guarantee there will be enough space to move over at the perfect time.

This is a lovely enough idea for actual intercity travel, and it only takes a couple of clueless asses to make that frustrating, but I see people who think it’s actually realistic in populated areas and I shake my head.

This. For soft crumb American sandwich sliced bread, you want as little air circulation as possible, balanced only by not crushing the loaf. A bread box is a quaint place to toss the bread once you squish the air out, but without the bag it’s basically the same as the chaotic evil option.

As a humanities major, it strikes me as a perfectly plausible title for an overpriced 4000-level or Masters degree text in Medieval Studies. Probably also accompanied by three other similar sounding texts and a xeroxed (or PDF’d, these days) packet of random essays assembled by the professor 15 years ago.

It’s also worth pointing out that rhyming is not the only way to get those pattern-recognition neurons firing. Meter in poetry/lyrics is all about this, and the Ancient Greeks knew all about it. They also knew all about mnemonic tropes (wine-dark sea) and other devices. Old English in particular built most of its poetry and songs around alliteration rather than rhyming.

We have a Dyson rechargeable for small pickups. It’s nice, but nowhere near worth the hype. Lots of ABS and technology that is legit, but hardly revolutionary like they claim. I also had to replace the power-tool style battery after about three years, which is fair but unremarkable for a plastic box full of 18650 cells.
