Yeah numbers are pretty hard to conceptualize unless you already know what they mean. The addition I would do is put the actual numbers there as well at the same time, so you could get a good reference with an example

They are refusing to use artificial intelligence for environmental, ethical and personal reasonsEnglish0·3 days ago“Hey why don’t you use this tool you don’t need? It does the thing worse than you do and also fucks up the planet in the process!”
Tonava@sopuli.xyzto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why is kindness often viewed as a sign of naïveté?8·4 days agoThere’s also the stupid belief that being mean = intelligent, which kinda overlaps with this. I somewhat blame House MD for that; that show was popular around the time when the idea got normalized in media, and now it just keeps going and is repeated in multiple ways in movies, series… etc. Rick and Morty is another great example of what that type of portrayal can cause, it’s done terrible damage in making it’s target audience associate meanness and assholery with being intelligent.
You can be both kind and intelligent, these qualities are not linked in real life, just like being naïve and kind are not. This means that being mean doesn’t make anyone look any smarter; it just makes you look like a mean asshole. This also seems to escape a lot of people and worsen the hateful shit both irl and online
It’s a stress reaction instinct thing if someone reading this didn’t know already. Something like “they’re not going to survive anyway, better use the resources myself to be able to escape and make more”. Many mammals kill their own young when stressed, I theoretize it could be somewhat behind post-partum depression as well since that can create strong feelings about how you have to kill your baby
Tonava@sopuli.xyzto Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Deleting my certified banger of a comment on WomensStuff because I respect the rule0·11 days agoI don’t see a problem with being public and having limiting rules - it’s perfectly fine for women or minority groups to have their own spaces - but never before have I seen such an odd approach to moderating. I too tumbled on one of their threads from ALL and it felt like at least third of the comments there was responded with, paraphrasing, “please never post again”. If every discussion reaching ALL gets like that, I’d imagine it would be easier to figure out some other solution, since it takes such insane amount of effort to go through so many comments and probably profiles and posting history to know who to reply that to, from moderating perspective. Or are they just saying that to everyone? Or everyone not subbed?? I doubt that many people getting answered with “please never post again” would want to join even if they did qualify…
It’s just… I don’t understand the logistics of all that
Tonava@sopuli.xyzto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do you reconcile staying sane while keeping yourself up-to-date with the news?31·13 days agoI went insane already in the early 2000s, when I realised nobody gave a shit about climate change and ecological destruction and nothing I could say or do made people understand or care. I had a good chuckle when the whole Greta-thing happened and suddenly more people cared, even though we’ve known this is happening for decades now. Too little, too late. There’s always war and genocide going, now we just know it’s happening in real time. Knowing changes nothing, we don’t learn from history, too few care and those who do get in power too rarely for any lasting change to happen.
I was about to kill myself for the first time in 2013 and honestly I should just have done it, it’s the decision I now regret the most in my life. I already died that day anyway, I have just been sort of lingering remnant after that, barely a person anymore. At least my parents could have had a decade to grieve me, now I’ve just dragged more people to care about me and will hurt them as well with my death. My suffering has just gotten worse and worse together with my physical and mental health; sometimes thing not only don’t get better, but just get worse. I don’t even know how I’m still here, probably just out of spite and lack of access to handguns. Eventually I’ll get to see what will manage to end me first, my body or my mind, I don’t even know which one is leading the race.
To conclude my insane and personal rant: not everyone can get a happy ending. Enjoy and do good if you still can
Befriending wild animals on their terms is awesome, no matter are they slugs, deer or birds. I’ve been bribing the neighbourhood corvids for about three years now, and gotten a few friends.
Hey, finally one without any downsides!

Endless stream of useless gym equipment and weird kitchen tools; they painted such a bizarre and surreal world full of repetition, forced plastic smiles and all sorts of almost otherwordly things that had nothing to do with reality. It was fascinating, almost like watching something of the fae folk
Tonava@sopuli.xyzto Programmer Humor@programming.dev•[No PHPun Intended] A Brief History of Web Development0·22 days agoThat tracks, without any background in coding php is very simple to get into. I’m not a woman, but as a personal anecdote I’ve never done anything outside some self-taught hobby-level web designing requiring html and js, and I only know some php because it’s what was easiest to learn by myself to get the stuff I wanted done.
I’ve looked into actual programming languages a couple times, but I never get far since I don’t need them for anything and all the tutorials start super boringly and won’t tell about the possibilities you could potentially do; it’s assumed you already know. With php I just knew what I needed and did some web searches and found the answers, and that kinda spiraled into leaning along the way. There’s no way to do that if you don’t even know where to start
I only care about them because of dr. Doom - and they somehow immediately fucked that up yet again. It takes some serious skills to make such bad decisions, thrice
Tonava@sopuli.xyzto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What app/program do you wish existed and what does it do that you've not found elsewhere?1·24 days agoYeah I’m trying to avoid MS if possible, especially since I probably have to try to make the jump to linux eventually with how things are going. I probably need to at least try Visio though, to see is it able to do what I want, so far I’ve had no luck with alternatives for it.
For example draw.io doesn’t seem to work for this (I’ve tried before as well), since I really need easy auto arranging for the nodes for it to be usable enough - and I haven’t been able to do that with it. So far the only thing that I’ve found to work even relatively well for what I want to do has been this even with it’s many limitations, since it allows to just pulling the lines wherever and it will auto arrange everything. When the trees grow to crazy sizes (over a hundred etc.), it’s almost impossible to make things work without the auto arranging, otherwise I wouldn’t even need the tools I’m looking for…

Tonava@sopuli.xyzto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What app/program do you wish existed and what does it do that you've not found elsewhere?0·26 days agoI wish there’d be a proper family tree generator, I’ve been searching for one for so long. All the things existing now seem to be old and made to create actual existing family trees with lots of limitations, but I’d really need a tool to use for world building and that kind of stuff. To allow you create profiles with a lot of data for the characters in the tree, so you could view the info in some easy way, maybe by clicking to open an info window, or something like that. To be able to easily link them to each other with other things than just family relations (like friends, lovers, enemies…). Being able to properly put a picture on the profiles so it would show there in the tree, not just a name. Just being able to properly view the whole family tree at once by zooming in and out would be so nice, and to link it with other family trees etc…
There are games that have some family tree functions, but I don’t need nor want a gaming experience. I want to do these things freely, not with having to play some shit to be able to unlock something, or to have family trees generated around just played characters. I’ve tried using mind map generating stuff as well, but they have limited features, and it’s difficult to just create branches with them since everything is supposed to link back to one single thing.
If anyone knows about something like this existing somewhere, please do tell me!
The rest of the gear is to reduce injury. You won’t die without it, but you will hurt. Maybe a lot.

Tonava@sopuli.xyzto Games@lemmy.world•What are your favourite single-player games without much fluff, grinding or difficulty spikes?English0·1 month agoHave you tried sandbox-like games, or just games that basically have no story line? Or is the more “adventuring” type of gameplay the one you enjoy the most? Personally I seem to find most games kinda boring outside puzzlegames and sandbox-things, since the typical stuff always has at least some form of grinding and I don’t really like fighting either.
I think his reasoning was to see how far the sign holding folks would go for money, and they apparently didn’t really have any limits. Should he have done and shown it on youtube is the thing he can be criticized for

Yeah, one can’t exactly control being born in poverty, health issues, accidents… the list goes on. It’s true though that you can still try with whatever you got. Climbing a tree is not reaching the sky, but it is off the ground
