The gloomy sentiment around Reddit Inc. has failed to dissipate after its shares fell 50% from a February high, with volatile technology stocks under pressure.
I mean. Elon Musk is exerting control of the platform too. Do you really want THAT shit in your cereal?
Get! Wreckt! Spaz!
I started to short them last month. Oh well. I knew all this anti free speech stuff is hurting them. They are only retaining the sycophants and the clueless niche people who never go out of their little bubble.
Reddit is 💩
How absolutely and entirely unexpected.
at this point Elon should buy it too, drive it to ground like Twitter.
This would actually be a great outcome.
While most people would likely move to Digg v2.0 (I am just being realistic), this will help fuel growth in the threadiverse. And at any rate, the major instances would simply not be able to handle 1 million MAUs immediately moving to Lemmy.
While most people would likely move to Digg v2.0 (I am just being realistic)
Are people actually going? The only thing I’ve heard about it (the AI-fueled reboot) is that it was planned.

It’ll be corporate owned and centralized, so I don’t care at all.
digg isn’t alive again yet afaik.
Personally I am done with corporate controlled social media sites. Just need a replacement for Youtube now.
It could also just turn it into another nazi mouthpiece, and make getting information out to people even worse than it is now.
I will speculate this is going to happen anyway, sooner or later.
While I am not American, I have lived in the the US and have many close friends there. From my understanding, American oligarchs have gone full in on a proto-fascist state (US is not yet fascist in the formal definition of the term, thing can and likely will get worse). This includes Hoffman and not only.
they saw trump as thier last grift, before things change. i mentioned on reddit subs, that the gops last grasp for power was trump(during his 1st term), and they will do whatever it takes to maintain it for another 5-10years, before people get sick of them. even thier voters, they can fool stupid people forever, since you would get tire of repitive messaging down the line.
US is not yet fascist in the formal definition of the term, thing can and likely will get worse.
Yes it is. We are already at the dictatorial stage in practice with the legislature and SCOTUS complying voluntarily by not enacting checks and balances. Everything else, like the nationalism, demonizing groups, and the rest are in full swing. Don’t need death camps to be fascist, although we are well on our way down that road.
What criteria isn’t being met yet in your opinion?
I think the piece that has yet to be tested is elections. As of now, we still live under the pretense that we will have a fair election.
The case can be made that the voter suppression tactics from the far right are eliminating the possibility of a fair election. Or that Elon Musks involvement has led to fraud, or at least, massive corruption to our electoral system. But at the end of the day, we still have a collective idea that the fix for this is an election that will remove them from power.
When the midterms come, that will be the real test.
It pains me to see the US go down this path. I am well aware of how bad things are going in the US (I have close friends who live there). I agree with you regarding nationalism, street arrests by security, demonization of minorities and so on.
However, I am comparing my experience living in russia (as an expat who happens to speak russian fluently), my experience living in the US under Obama and US as it is today.
US still has competitive elections. The US centre right opposition is not a formal front for the regime. Compare that to russia were elections are a formality and the so called “opposition parties” get direct orders from the regime and exist as circus performers. US isn’t at that stage yet.
Same with the US judicial system. It is definitely corrupt (and this was true even before Trump) and it is getting even more corrupt. However, the US judicial system has some level of independence and at least on some level you can have your rights be respected. Again, compare that to russia were the judicial system as such does not exist and has no authority whatsoever.
Security services in the US are increasingly becoming unhinged and acting more like crooks, but it’s no where close to russia where they have zero liability beyond not respecting key regime interests.
US still has a measure of political de-centralization. You can elect mayors and governors and they have a measure of independence. While russian does have some regional independent power centres, they are still all aligned with the regime and its ideology.
I know, comparing your local political system to russia isn’t really a sane approach. But I do think it is important to note that the differences do exist.
Fascism and other authoritarian systems aren’t a measuring contest though. Just because somewhere else has been doing it longer or is more effectively doesn’t mean somewhere else isn’t doing or trying to do the same thing.
A benevolent dictatorship is still a dictatorship for example. While the Republicans have enacted widespread voter suppression that didn’t guarantee winning an election, that doesn’t mean they aren’t working on the steps to guarantee it in the next election. Fascism doesn’t require complete and total success to be fascism.
I completely agree. I don’t mean to imply it is a competition. As I said, being better than russia is not much of an achievement.
But I do think the correct term for the US as it is today is proto-fascist. It’s also important to not ignore the transition into full scale fascis.
Meh. I joined Reddit in the original great Digg exodus, I’m not going back.
Digg is excited about “AI” moderation. So, they’re gonna be going the route of banning users for wrongthink just as Reddit did. I don’t think it’s going to be that popular.
I watched the video on the Digg.com front page and it was a bunch of very rich dudes sitting on a couch, with the same energy and words of other very rich dudes. I don’t think it will be better. They just don’t live in the same world.
Huffman needs exactly 0 help to run reddit into the ground. He’s been doin’ it for years.
It’s actually kinda nice that he’s not going full nose-dive straight into the ground. Getting a steady stream of users is better for Lemmy’s culture, than a full exodus event, imo. It gives us a chance to not be reddit, but something better.
I don"'t like that solution because that means Huffman walks away with a golden payday instead of losing it all.
Maybe he’ll get bored with retirement, have a mid-no-life crisis and the resulting breakdown will generate some interesting news stories.
Maybe it’s because they banned all of their users
Soon it’ll just be bots banning bots.
Good ol’ bot-on-bot action.
Sounds like fun on the bun!
Oh no! Anyways, what’s everyone’s Friday plans?
Playing Pikmin 4, gonna stop soon to make eggs and bacon, and watch the movie Heat before it expires off my To Watch list lol
Not much, just stare at Luigi’s picture and droll.
I don’t have any yet, I need to work out and go for a run, but after that I’ll probably hang with some friends. Maybe have a drink or two.
Do drugs. Look at all the content on lemmynsfw. Masturbate.
Teaching my friend’s kids about Linux and python, and watching a movie with them afterwards. Probably have a brewski or two.
Watching Star Trek with my pants down
I’m confused, that seems to imply there’s other ways to watch Star Trek?
Imma hop on resonite and get wasted with friends.
I’m gonna go to a Mexican restaurant with friends and have a huge Dos Equis with my lunch.
Might go to church.
Where is the Garfield spez comic?
lmao, they tried to suspend my account for “harassing” a scam post.
They 7-day banned me for ‘encouraging violence’ for saying I didn’t think Mangione deserved to go to jail for what he did. I appealed it and it was lifted, but not before it was upgraded to a permanent ban for ban-evasion on other accounts (I’ve never had more than one account in my 14 years of reddit.) The perma-ban was lifted on appeal too, but by that point I was just like fuuuuck off.
Same thing happened to me. I told a guy to fuck off and got banned for not being nice. I appealed, but before that process completed, they permanbanned my 14 year account. I like that on Lemmy I can say normally uncontroversial things like “Nazi scum fuck off”.
Indeed, Nazi scum can fuck off.
I heard they did that a bunch of other users too, temp ban, resulted in perma ban of other accounts as soon as the temp ban was lifted.
i’ve had various accounts over the years and never gotten hit for “ban evasion”. that being said that suspension was my last straw and i deleted my account.
I appealed it and it was lifted, but not before it was upgraded to a permanent ban for ban-evasion on other accounts (I’ve never had more than one account in my 14 years of reddit.)
Reddit has a feature where there helpfully link your account to stranger’s accounts. When the stranger is banned from any sub, you are too. But you don’t know you are banned from those subs. So when you innocently post, you get perma-banned.
I got in trouble for “report abuse” as I reported every post for sexualizing minors in a sub dedicated to a certain musician/OnlyFans model “in their prime” aka before they were 18.
ಠ_ಠ gross
Yes this was worse in my mind than getting the sane for reporting a sub that sold CSAM because at least that involved research and critical thinking (why would a post be a scan of a print photograph taken with an analogue camera of a handwritten list of porn mags? answer: they were all legally produced at the time CSAM)
Huh, maybe if reddit wasn’t overly restrictive to free speech they’d get more actively engaged users. Oh well, I guess they’ll have to suffer the consequences of their actions. I know this article blames reliance on google and stagnant ads for this, but I can’t help but think restricting speech and shutting down discussions also plays a role. Front page of the internet my ass.
Not just restrictive of free speech. Openly abusive to users. Shadowbanning with zero indication of what is going on, or why.
Hey fam, I’m another Reddit refugee. I heard Lemmy is what Reddit was back in the day. Sad to see Reddit go to hell.
Politics are hotter than old Reddit, but I guess that goes with the times.
The “federation” aspect is pretty different in a good way. You see a lot of integration with Mastadon, for instance, as the Fediverse is trying to integrate with itself, and each Lemmy instance is like a little fiefdom with its own flavor and subs, whereas Reddit was always more of a monoculture.
More or less. There aren’t as many bots, and everyone is generally aware of traditional Internet etiquette (i.e. don’t be an asshole). Lemmy also feels as homogenous as early Reddit: college-educated white people in western countries.
I started joining forums back in the late nineties and I’ve learned every place on the Internet is in flux. Things always change. Back in the day, stuff would happen like we would lose hosting because someone got sick of running a niche phpBB forum or the moderation team would change. When social media kicked off, changes were driven by money. Facebook was a big gaming platform in my college years (Farmville), which feels completely foreign to today’s Facebook.
The smaller the community, the more stable it is. Some of those 20-year forums still exist, albeit in a much more diminished state. If a site/platform gets popular, that’s when things can change quickly.
Lemmy has already changed since I joined and I’m sure it will become something different in the future.
Sync for Lemmy feels just like Reddit is Fun (RiF). So good
I used to use RiF and loved Sync for Lemmy too. I just wish the developer would fix the bug for posts showing unread! It’s completely stopped me from using the app for something like 6 months now.
What do you mean my that? Like, your own posts or those of others?
Not sure I’m seeing that on my side. Could be wrong tho
It depends on the version of Lemmy that your instance is running. My account is on sh.itjust.works which upgraded Lemmy versions a few months ago. Apparently it changed a parameter name that keeps track if a post has been read or not.
So on Sync, you can click on posts, but they never show as read. It’s super annoying, so I went back to Voyager.
The Voyager iOS App makes it feel like I never left.
Same for me using Boost on Android. It looks like Reddit only without the bots and AI slop.
Same! I’m still a little confused about the way the federation works but I love the decentralization and democratization of the platform. And Boost makes it feel very familiar.
There is also a PWA version for those looking to try it out, and I believe it’s on F-Droid as well.
There are a few minor cultural differences to be aware of. But as long as you avoid saying anything negative about Star Trek or Linux, you should be just fine.
Yea, and can’t be criticizing Nutrek
Reddit refuge here.
I do miss all the niche subreddits. As the saying goes, “there’s a subreddit for everything.”
But I think with time, Lemmy can grow to fill that gap.
I mod lemmy.ml/c/antitrust and we need more people contributing!
I have no doubt we will!
While we still doesn’t have all kinds of active niche communities over here, it is incredible how much the community has grown since I first came here. And that’s not really all that long ago.
Thanks for joining us! :)
You gotta Field of Dreams it. I’m doing it for LV426/the Aliens universe. Just treat it like you’re starting a forum or a newsletter and, hopefully in time, others will contribute and it’ll grow organically.
I’m trying to figure that out but I I have to make my own server? Or is it a sub on lemmy.world? There definitely a learning curve
In my case I’m just posting a lot to already-created communities found in the Lemmy directory that’ve got a chunk of subscribers.
If you’re going to start your own community for your own interest, I’d advise at least setting up on an already-populated Lemmy server (which you would have to be registered on) so it gets listed in the local directory.
If you’re going to host the Lemmy server and your community, I have no experience on that front/I would imagine there’s a lot of SEO and self-promotion you’d have to do to get it off the ground.
You don’t have to make your own server (unless you really want to!). Just start a community on a server you like.
The one catch is that others can start a community of the same name and/or interest on another server and that gets a little confusing because then there are two, of course.
I wish that communities could “federate” with each other from different instances but then that raises a bunch of logistics issues about how this is moderated, how is this presented to the users, etc.
You’re right
it’s time for me to post the weird porn
I’m unzipped and waiting, bud
owo
Username checks out?
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Thank you for your service.
Where is the LV426 community?
I mostly contribute here, mostly.
Thanks. I’m in!
These days I go 50/50 on Reddit and Lemmy. I know it’s a chicken and egg problem for content, but hopefully 50% usage is enough to change things over time.
Same. Is your name related to the youtube channel?
Yeah I’ve been on Lemmy maybe 2 years or so now? I find myself going back for the subreddits of my interest. But I will try to start posting here more.
Ultimately I believe in the fediverse despite all of its growing pains.
It’ll take awhile to grow those niche communities.
I ported !engineeringmemes@lemmy.world. Because of its limited volume, it’s barely an effort to moderate.
Just start the communities you want to see :)
Be the change you want to see! Start up your own niche community!
If it makes you feel any better, Reddit is and always has been shit. From their “fake it till you make it” days to the “narwhals and bacon” and then the RealFeelz™ community make-believe. It’s the people that made it what it was, the platform has always been a steaming loaf of shit.
edit: Oh wait, how could I forget the ViolentAcrez days. The LARPing mental case that had 300 accounts and VPNs before most knew what that was, and spent his entire LIFE trolling until he got found out by his employer who very publicly humiliated and fired his ass. The same fuckwit that Spez partnered with to run all kinds of scum subs like JailBait, etc. Reddit is shit, made by shit people. Good people accidentally found it now they’re leaving.
Welcome! I came in with the blackout a year or so ago, it’s been fun to see more people show up over the months!
Who told you these lies? Lemmy took the bad parts and called them features.
Reddit was killed by spez. RIP. Long live Lemmy! Hopefully it’s insulated from meddling by venture capital.
Feels that way to me. I wasn’t there like at the very beginning, but was able to be in a few small subreddits turn big. Some turned to shit, some turned okay. Lemmy/mbin a.k.a. threadiverse seems like it was before my time I started with reddit
Lemmy, Mbin, and now PieFed!
I didn’t want to put piefed yet since it’s still developing, but pretty fast and hard to give them credit. Is one I most looking forward to because of their topics and feeds. I thought I’d appreciate mbin having built in sorry for microblogs, but I didn’t even explore much of it
Yeah I was excited about Kbin.social as well, both for not being developed by political extremists and for having more capabilities. However, like you I never ended up using that whole microblogging style bc I simply prefer the Threadiverse format so much more.
PieFed is indeed developing FAST! But there are minor to moderate annoyances while trying to use it so yeah, I understand people not being ready for that yet. Fwiw, if you were just wanting to avoid being on the server that uses the bleeding edge codebase (PieFed.social), there are a few others, namely https://feddit.online/ (for the list of others see here: https://join.piefed.social/try/, with additional information at https://piefed.fediverse.observer/list).
It’s fantastic to have choices, whether we decide on PieFed, Mbin, or Lemmy to meet our needs on the (Threadi-)Verse!:-)
Piefed sucks bigtime.
It’s better than Reddit, badumtis!
(Yeah, a very low bar indeed) When was the last time you tried it? It gets better literally weekly.
Genuinely there are elements that I prefer using in Lemmy, and other elements I prefer PieFed, with the balance overall being 90:10 PieFed to Lemmy. And PieFed is growing by leaps and bounds. Lemmy is growing too but more slowly (it also might end up being more stable at larger scales - I dunno, though PieFed also sends like 25x less data per post iirc so the reverse could rather be true).
Still, use whichever you prefer - the Fediverse is fantastic in offering us so many choices, all for free! Much respect to the dev teams of both, and Mbin too, as well as instance admins and most mods who donate their time to keep it all going!
Oh noooo! That’s teeeeerrible! Oh noooooooo etc etc etc lol F Reddit in the A with a big rubber dick!!!
I mean why buy shares of reddit? What is it doing? It’s alienating users.
Literally every single change reddit has done in the past few years has angered the user base, and the bot accounts increase day by day. Go to any niche subreddit, like one for a movie series, show, video game, etc. You will see a ton of “what’s your opinion of X or Y?” And it’s always such a weird choice of words, and it’s clearly just a bot farming engagement to inflate numbers to shareholders.
I still use reddit, but I never post or comment. I strictly do that on one of my Lemmy accounts. And every few months, something will happen to make the experience worse. Like now, the frontpage “hot” sorting is broken. Just a bunch of zero up vote posts on weird subreddits I forgot I was subscribed to. Now I can’t really get the news like I used to on reddit. It’s broken, and there is tall that it’s a result of Elon meeting with spez to talk about moderating the surge of Elon/Teslur hate.
Fuck reddit, more niche communities need to come over here, because I’m so tired of having to go through reddit to fine things I’m interested in.
It was going downhill since they got rid of the woman who was running AMA
Yeah remember that being an inflection point where I stopped being excited about updates and started dreading them.
Yeah why is the question never “how can we make peoples lives better?” its always “?whats the profit margin”
I’m waiting to see the bubble poping out.
