  • I’m not sure if this would fall under the definition of “skill issue”, but I’ve never had any luck getting Samba to work on even a local network.

This may be the same argument at “immutable” distros, having an environment where the user cannot fuck it up will be the best way to spur adoption rates, and eventually ambitious users will use more granular methods like you described.

    I probably will use this.

  • I haven’t done enough research to say for sure, unfortunately. I know AMD is far better than Nvidia in terms of not being as entrenched in AI development (which by extension, is weaponized for generating target information), and they’re also better in terms of not being as proprietary (hiding everything behind closed doors), although that’s not directly related.

So currently? I think they’re morally better than Nvidia, yeah. But it’s not a high bar to clear, and as their market share progresses, they may fall to the same practices that Nvidia was encouraged to embrace.

  • I would honestly follow where your community/friends are at. The minecraft modding community is extensive and amazing at bringing endless experiences to you, and the amount of active playthroughs willing to accept new members is likely higher on Minecraft than Minetest instances.

However, if you wish to develop and mod yourself rather than play on pre-existing modded and vanilla content, I could see some great experiences from joining a community on Minetest. But to me, Minetest is a development and educational tool, not a game.

Edit: I would highly recommend playing on the Java edition of the game, rather than bedrock, and feel free to take your time exploring the wealth of updates you likely missed.

  • But that’s the frustrating thing, isn’t it? The only winning move is not to play… but no one wants to move their pieces from the board.

For as destructive and infuriatingly powerful as they are, these weapons have not been used after 1945. While it may happen within our lifetimes, it is unlikely that they will be used. They are the proverbial gun to our heads that forces us to the bargaining table, rather than the trenches (at least for the world powers).

I don’t think it realistic that nuclear weapons will be decommissioned. If anything, I believe the opposite may be true - nuclear weapons shall serve as a guarantee to all nations who possess them against being absorbed by war, or imperialism.

The next interesting quandary will be when every state who wishes the nuclear guarantee possesses it. Then who knows what will happen. If everyone is “safe”, would no one be in reality?

Will we be set to fight wars with sticks and stones after the blast?

Hard to say. But I’m pessimistic about disarmament. Self-interests and nuclear security are far greater draws than the vision of world peace. At least for our leaders.

    It’s quite depressing.
