As far as I’m aware, in the US, the only mandated and enforced expiration dates by law are for baby food manufacturers.
Everything else is a vendor suggestion.

If you’re trying to prep, you know, you can have canned food for a long time, past its expiration date. But for the sake of capitalism and moving product, people hoarding food is not necessarily good idea. Also, there’s a potential that there could be something wrong with it. Different foods have different shelf lives as well, so. There is also the argument that when eating fresh produce, it is way healthier for you. Like the notion, if the food still has cellular activity, it’s going to transfer into your body. It’s better for you. It’s at peak nutrition.
