Truth is, these big companies don’t care about you. Or your opinion. You can threaten them about “switching to Linux”, but these companies will think twice and say:

    • if we take this complaint seriously, we might retain one (1) customer, which makes us $1000 in the future
    • if we follow Trump, we might get some favorable legislation, which makes us $10000000

how, do you think, will apple react?

I don’t really know how to feel about this.

Was it decreed by an absolute narcissist for no reason other than the kind of blatant arrogance Americans are notorious for? Absolutely.

Was it also completely legal? As far as I can tell. It’s not really these companies’ place to resist map name changes, it’s the citizens’ and our representatives’.

Does it have anything at all to do with fascism? No.

Most of the things Traitorapist Trump does is a desperate plea for your attention. Remember that 1 day immigration “crackdown”? He just wanted your unneccessary attention for that one particular day. If finding illegals was that easy they would have already been caught by Biden. He will do another one, but it will be on a random day that Trump is worried you aren’t paying him enough attention. There is no master plan on immigration, just a bunch of 1 day stunts. You can also safely ignore everything Trump says about annexing Canada, Greenland, and Gaza.

Ignore all Trump’s meaningless nonsense and 1 day stunts. Instead of doing that, pay attention to his 2 big related things which are his (1) Enshitification Push and his (2) Fascism Push. Fascism involves Enshitification, but his Enshitification Push goes beyond Fascism and includes things like trying to normalize corruption, promote incompetence, and hugely degrade the quality of government. Somebody needs to track every single one of the specific details of those things. But here is what we do NOT need to do: don’t fall into Trump’s narcissism web and think that just because Trump says some stupid thing every day you need to pay attention to him every day. On most days you do not.

All he can dictate is what official American maps call it. But he can’t make everyone else rename it, Apple and Google did not need to rename it they could have ignored him who has no legal power to do anything to them but they are kissing his bronzed arse so of course they did.

Who has the authority to dictate what things should be called on a map if not the government? Tech companies are supposed to make these decisions?

No that’s the point it would not be in defiance of the government because the government don’t have the authority to tell private companies or individuals what bits of water should be called. All president has the authority to do is dictate what federal agencies call it.

The whole reason that everyone thinks this is a massive waste of time is precisely because he doesn’t actually have the authority to force anybody to do anything. 20 years from now I highly doubt anyone is still going to be calling it the Gulf Of America, it’s just a PR stunt to keep his supporters happy.

They don’t need the authority. If the government says “this is x” and you say “no, this is y” that’s defiance.

At the same time it’s the map’s job to describe the world. Even for something like nation states where there’s an official name, the map uses the common name. Our maps say France, not French Republic.

Changing the displayed name for a body of water shared by several nations doesn’t make much sense, especially when the common name has yet to follow.

At least that’s from the perspective of one of the goals the map ostensibly wants to serve.

To be fair, the entire history of humanity is full of exactly that. These are mostly just aimed at and recognized by the US. Same as Russia currently renaming occupied villages. Nobody else recognizes those, it’s just not that special or important at this point, with all of the other shit going on.

Ultimately, the names of places change. All the time. And will continue to change. It’s just what we do as humans. Somebody uses force and swings their dick around and locally others have to either accept it, silently or whining, or punch the fucker. Elsewhere people fight similar fights and care very little about the other dickswingers far away.

The world today has nothing to do with the world 200 years ago. GAFAM are controlling the way information is shared and it’s very, they are more powerful then anything humanity has ever seen. It’s Big Brother from 1984.

But unlike americans, I don’t consider that we should just don’t care and stop whining. I’ll keep fighting fascism any way I can.

Honestly - this is from a playbook used by every autocratic administration: “Take the attention away from the more important things”. Seen it in EU constantly: Hungary, Slovakia, Serbia, etc. So sure, report it, but be aware this is a charade.

Its about tactics - countries with autocratic leaders usually employ similar tactics where they e.g.

        1. make a big change to some segment of law (more/less important - but has to be something that hits everyone or doesn’t make sense), so the media reports on that, then make changes to it again (due to public pressure), so that media and population gets these topics in waves, just so they make everyone blind to their corruption games they play in the background,
        2. or they use some politician from their party/coalition to stir the pot in their ministry they lead by playing drama queens by accusing the opposition of corruption,
        3. or they leave a “less important” political role to a crazy person, they do stupid shit that takes years to fix and you essentially have constant drama and info taking away everyones attention from the important stuff.
        4. etc etc

But you get the point - calling it Gulf of America essentially gives you free patriotic bonus points from your followers and also makes your opposition / people invest in something that is, in the end, total waste of time (time which could be used for something else, like educating these populist/autocratic/however you call it tactics to everyone, so that your average Joe doesn’t get fooled by it so easily).

Creating some drama/infuriation to keep news noisy in order to hide his fascist dictator playbook moves
