Maybe, but my opinion is borne out of experience. Having to drive 40+ minutes for groceries, running a generator for power, a water pump to get running water, and shitting in an outhouse gets old.
Also, people are nice if you aren’t a shut in. I like being able to wander over to friends’ house without it being that much of a hassle.
Grow and hunt, solar panels, electric pump, and a septic tank you can pay someone to clear for you. Technology didn’t stop in the 1930’s. You can also invite people to your land, fulfilling your last problem.
Depends on your house, right. I know someone who lives completely off grid, although they do have indoor plumbing. They’re not even way out in the wilds either, just 10-15 miles from the nearest town. They’re actually only a mile or two from a hydroelectric plant! I’d say it is unusual and unnecessary though, in most cases
