invertedspear@lemmy.zipto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•We all know grammar Nazis. What incorrect grammar are you completely in defence of?English3·17 days agoAn “and” before the last item tells you it’s an inclusive list. An “or” before the last item tells you it’s a pick one. A “nor” tells you it wasn’t any of those. It’s word to wait to the last item to know what the list was, but English is a screwed up language.
invertedspear@lemmy.zipto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How did each of the gods die, and what did we get from them?English3·19 days agoLikely, I get them confused.
invertedspear@lemmy.zipto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How did each of the gods die, and what did we get from them?English19·19 days agoTerry Pratchet wrote in Good Omens that the apocalypse horsemen Pestilence was slain by the advent of penicillin.
From my own head:
Mercury was killed to bring about the Internet.
Athena was not killed, but severely weakened to domesticate the herd animals.
We sacrificed Fenris for lap dogs.
I love this thread and will be working some of this into my next RPG storyline.
invertedspear@lemmy.zipto RPGMemes @ttrpg.network•Hot take: Strongest creatures in the setting shouldn't just be clowned by PCs with no resistance.English2·22 days agoAlso WoD:
Player: I’m a mage I’m literally changing reality, I will cure that vampire.
System: vampirism is a curse from God, do you really think you can roll more successes than God?
invertedspear@lemmy.zipto RPGMemes @ttrpg.network•The more I get into WoD, the more I'm Jesse to my friend's WaltEnglish28·1 month agoI’d argue you need correspondence to cast it to a place you can’t see, but that’s just how I run it, every table is different.
invertedspear@lemmy.zipto No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why does it feel like protesting isn't as "extreme" as it used to be?English15·1 month agoThe powers that be have no fear of ignoring protestors any more. Or education presents civil rights protests as peaceful and effective, that all we need to do is raise awareness and show solidarity and oppressors will relent. Education speaks of the black panthers, but doesn’t go into depth on how they were the armed wing of the movement.
So now today we’re protesting because we don’t like what’s happening, but what is the consequence to the power hungry? If the protests get anything approaching non peaceful, or even if they just want to, those in charge can escalate to military actions.
We also don’t have a clearly defined win condition. What is going to make things better? When do we stop? Is the goal just to raise awareness to get people to vote for a change in 1-4 years? Or are we looking for something more immediate?
Finally how far are we willing to go? If I’m not willing to die for it, or to risk my current comfortable life style, can I ever really push hard enough against current conditions? They’re willing to kill to keep their power, am I willing to kill to pry it from them?
They don’t fear us because they know we have so much more to lose than they do. We are not yet playing a game with equal stakes.
I don’t have a solution to this, so I’ll at least keep doing the peaceful thing, because it’s better than doing nothing.
invertedspear@lemmy.zipto Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•US question: Would you approve of your state seceding from the Union, declaring independence from the United States? I think California, Oregon, and Washington would, and probably Colorado too.English5·2 months agoIf you don’t take AZ and NV with you, you will get your Colorado River water cut off and lose a lot of farming power. That might even require UT. Unless it’s only Northern California included, in which case you still lose that agriculture, and possible land based trade lines to Mexico. It’s not a clean and pretty separation.
invertedspear@lemmy.zipto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Which of your favorite sci-fi tech seems achievable in a reasonable timeframe, say 100 years?English4·2 months agoDownload the Phyphox app to access your phones raw sensor data. Very much like a tricorder.
invertedspear@lemmy.zipto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Which of your favorite sci-fi tech seems achievable in a reasonable timeframe, say 100 years?English12·2 months agoCheck out the app Phyphox, it uses all your existing sensors and probably surpasses tricorders in several ways while, of course, lacking in a few others.
invertedspear@lemmy.zipto Piracy: ꜱᴀɪʟ ᴛʜᴇ ʜɪɢʜ ꜱᴇᴀꜱ@lemmy.dbzer0.com•Has anyone pirated their internet?English3·2 months agoI could have been that neighbor. For many years I was a WiFi communist and intentionally kept my AP open. I depended on free WiFi to get through college so I provided free WiFi. Then I got a cease and desist from my ISP for someone pirating a shit ton of porn. Like the list was about 10 full length pornos. Had to lock it down after that. I’ve considered making some deals with my neighbors to extend my mesh network into their house in exchange for space in their driveway, but haven’t gotten around to it.
So long.
The TV one is real. Without the remote the TV has one button. Hitting it turns it on if it’s off. When it’s on, hitting it brings up a menu, tap to what you want then hold it down to select it. Even turning it off is super annoying, but trying to do anything else is damn near impossible.
