The software and programming world desparately needs to go more woke, so does gaming culture in general, it is the only way to get the toxic assholes to shut up and sit down… and create the oxygen needed for communities that arent embarassing sess pools of tiny pathetic men who exclude everyone else.

I was on Xitter to read an update about LGRs situation, when I got one of those “suggested tweets” about Godot from some random account. I clicked on it because I thought it was a totally different situation like Godot going closed source or something.

Nope. It was an entire thread on a bunch of racist transphobes being pissy about an LGBTQ post and how Godot was “Woke” now and “Why are they being political now”. “Go woke or go broke” was also mentioned unironically a quite a bit and how people were going to leave in drives for Unity. Nice to see the chant was (once again) proven wrong.

It was a disgusting echo chamber, I had to wash my hands after that.

how people were going to leave in droves

These idiots seriously think they’re in the majority viewpoint. No exposure to reality will dissuade them of this belief.

That is exactly the issue with algorithm-driven social media : they are the majority in their reality. It is distorted because of the algorithm, but nevertheless it is the world they are living in.

I think it is worse that, if you want to make serious money off of running a social network, and dont want to actually have real moderation (which paying for essentially erases any serious profit margin) instead of ai crap, this is always how it is going to turn out. Bluesky might claim to be different but is just a slight reframing of the “problem” that leverages the high cost of moderation to set the stage for rationalizing centralization down the road.

I mean yeah elon musk is a shithead toxic jerk, but it isnt like any other corporate social networks actually do any genuine moderation at scale that is legitimately effective at protecting people who are considered a target by rightwing trolls.

You can either create profit for shareholders off of running a social network or have it be a healthy place for people, pick one.

      “Go woke, go broke”.

Seriously, has this really happened to any company?

It’s easy to claim Bud Light, but they were doing fine until they backed away from supporting LGBT, then they had trouble (from both sides), so it’s just as easy to claim “Go fasc, no cash”.

cockroach “people” then jumped in on it triggering a harassment campaign

If we look at their perspective, engines that could block you from developing in them are more “woke” than an open source one that doesn’t enforce any restriction on its developers by design. Going after godot for this feels so dumb.

For those objecting to this it’s absolutely true. Fight Nazis, with guns when necessary, but do not be misled into believing they are wholly alien or inhuman. That’s how you end up living in the middle of a bunch of Nazis without realizing their Nazis.

The last thing I want is to normalize dehumanizing people

Dehumanising really isn’t effective against nazis, because it implies that actual humans aren’t capable of atrocious behaviour while we’ve clearly seen that they are. It’s always better to call nazis/fascists/imperialists/colonialists/racists/homophobes/etc by their name.

It was the official discord until earlier this year, so it’s kinda not just “some unofficial server”. Also, the mod in question was using racial slurs. Granted, the Godot foundation also split ways with them.

Additionally there was something about an over zealous community manager blocking people over responses that supposedly weren’t all that inflammatory or bad? I’m not super sure there, I’ve only kinda half been paying attention to it

This leaves out a lot. xananax did use the n-word in a few messages 8 years ago to refer to himself as a joke, in response to being called that in other communities (he’s arab and thus one of the slurs was sand n-word). He has apologized for those messages a long time ago, and throughout the years has shown no tolerance towards towards racism or any other kinds of bigotry. What he did do sometimes was use some very strong and crude language (think on the level of calling someone human filth) towards such bigots (if I recall correctly there were at least two instances of such events in the past once towards someone defending israel’s actions and another towards a transphobe, he did apologize for both I think). Like, I think he can be criticized, but not for racism.

Also, I think the main drama is just bigots suddenly noticing Godot’s stance in regards to inclusiveness that the foundation had the whole time, from a tweet by the foundation sarcastically using the word “woke” and encouraging people to share their games that are “woke”. The xananax thing isn’t really the main drama, I think.

Yes, the Twitter drama is the actual drama, not the discord stuff. Their official Twitter posted a relatively harmless “woke” tweet, which got met with the usual derogatory replies you would expect on Twitter. They then deleted all those replies and blocked their authors, but also deleted and blocked tons of regular replies to the tweet.

The following statement by their community manager also pissed off a lot of people, because they were asking everyone that got blocked to manually appeal the block, instead of just taking their time to review the tweets they deleted and unblocking people

Even then it’s still a minor drama that is getting blown out of proportion

        The n-word.

Such named for multiple incidents of edgy preteens using it in voice chat. And then PewDiePie cementing the relationship during an infamous incident where he said it while playing player unknown’s battlegrounds.

Literally every game dev I know feels the same way. Gamers are the actual worst. Even when they’re not doing their culture war schtick, they’re complaining about the overhead of borderless fullscreen like it’s 2010.
