we’ve normalised the idea that we own celebrities, that they owe us continuous intrusion into their private lives as a condition of fame. there’s always a line, a fuzzy one, currently drawn somewhere near paparazzi (they’re evil vs they’re a necessary evil, how else would we get our pics).

society is built on these lines separating the acceptable from the unacceptable. they change, more quickly than we remember. we don’t smoke in restaurants. we do wear seat belts. but the people who fought those battles, not that long ago, were pariahs.

ellen degeneres (before she became 😡 ellen 😡 for different reasons) was blackballed for coming out. chappell roan is kissing women in her videos. if she wants to try to move the privacy line, and risk being a pariah for it, good for her. she’s either proven right or wrong over time. she’ll either pay or she won’t. but she’s using her capital for something that’s important to her, and that she sees as important to her industry. everyone’s entitled to try.

Chappell nailed it, that’s what I think.

She has every right to what she’s claiming for herself, every right to expect it to be honored, and that’s what should be the default to begin with.

That goes for everyone, everywhere, not just famous people.

Well she is fighting against a culture here. It is generally accepted that musicians who become stars need to give up some of their privacy, and should take photos with fans etc. It will be hard to establish that she wants that differently, especially as her communication isnt “I want us to be different” but rather “you people arent normal, leave me alone”.

Yeah I’m kind of in the middle on this one. She deserves privacy, but also stardom has it’s cost. People are going to want to know who you are, you’re face is going to be plastered everywhere, it’s a natural human thing that people are going to be curious, and yelling at fans who… recognize you is not a good look IMO.

Now, I will say that when it gets into stalking and harrassment, or genuine parasocial relationships, that’s not healthy, and should be called out.
